Museumshop is open!
To mark the documenta X show, Studio Acconci was commissioned to design a bookshop for the publisher and bookseller Walther König. For 100 days there were a total of a thousand books housed there. Studio Acconci decided on a simple construction principle using the materials steel and Plexiglas, as well as wood for the shelves. The free-standing bookcases in the space structured the large “documenta-Halle”, work tables provided inviting places to rest and thumb through books. The sales area was integrated into the ensemble.
This work for documenta X was originally to have been adapted for the library of the Museum of Contemporary Art and the former bookshop thereby transformed into a reading library. The previous structure, however, was ultimately not sufficient for the library’s requirements. The installation has now been converted into a business environment: this time for the museum shop. Even if the range does not comprise books exclusively, all kinds of ›printed matter‹ i.e. printed materials are in the foreground. ›Printed matter‹ is originally a class of mail that includes newspapers, periodicals or product samples. Today this term is used for various different printing works or products. Artists and designers with whom the Museum of Contemporary Art collaborates are invited to develop products. The museum shop’s range also includes museum editions and publications.
