How is Artistic Quality being Produced?

German Histories

Since February 2007 the collection of the GfZK has annually been presented according to several issues. It starts with the exhibition German Histories.

Basically these works were the fundamental beginning of the Collection of the Gallery in the 1990. Long-term loans from the Cultural Committee of German Business of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) range from artists whose works were partly influenced by Bauhaus and labelled >degenerate< by the Nazis, to East and West German, politically motivated artists of the 1950s and 1960s. This collection represents a concept linking East and West, male and female artists across the generations. Artistic positions that were not permitted in any appropriate forum in the GDR are linked with internationally active artists and with representatives of the younger generations. The collection also focuses on works by artists from the GDR who did not necessarily fit into the official state canon, for example by Carlfriedrich Claus, Harald Metzkes, Hermann Glöckner and Strawalde. The collection is continually extended through donations from collectors, including works by Hermann Nitsch, Günther Förg, Martin Kippenberger, Walter Dahn, Jíří Georg Dokoupil, Jonathan Meese and Sarah Morris, for example. Artists who have exhibited at GfZK have also broadened the collection, such as Mischa Kuball, Horst Bartnig, Sibylle Bergemann and Ilya Kabakov, along with works purchased by the Friends Organisation of the GfZK from Olafur Eliasson, Tobias Rehberger, Tilo Schulz, Dan Peterman, Franz West, Dorit Margreiter and others.
