The Friends Organisation Realised a Dream...

The Museum of Contemporary Art owes its existence in large measure to the efforts of its Friends organization. The Friends of the Leipzig Museum of Contemporary Art came into being on 10 November 1990. The 33 founding members elected Arend Oetker, Rolf Hoffmann, Klaus Werner and Siegfried Seidel to the board of directors at the time, with Hans Marquard following in 1993. On 26 September 1996, the Free State of Saxony, the city of Leipzig and the Friends organization together founded the non-profit Museum of Contemporary Art. Klaus Werner was the first-ever director of the museum, which moved to its first premises, the Herfurth’sche Villa, in 1998.

In recent years, a new, positive trend has developed: the members meet regularly at exhibition openings, in artists’ studios or as part of other activities and attend important exhibitions outside the GfZK and Leipzig. A new surge yielded “Carte Blanche”, the central project for 2008 and 2009. Above all members of the Friends organization have set an example by accepting the invitation to “Carte Blanche”. Moreover, the Friends organization boasts many members who continually volunteer themselves, be it through their support of building applications, the performance of organizational tasks, travel planning, etc.

The Friends organization is at its core an interest group born out of a love and passion for art. Membership is also a sign of commitment to the institution. So become a member and support the Museum of Contemporary Art today!
